The Minnesota segment of the EcoTour can be traveled within a few hundred metres of Lake Superior. The shore is characterized by alternating rocky cliffs and cobblestone beaches. Scenic rivers and waterfalls descend the rolling hills and ridges as they flow to Lake Superior. There are several highway rest stops that provide an opportunity to explore beaches and photograph cascading waterfalls.
The scenic route between Duluth and Two Harbors requires one to slow down a little but it is worth the time to take a few photos or stop to refuel at a roadside restaurant.
Further north, between Two Harbors and Grand Portage, the highway passes through the Superior National Forest. This is a multi-use area that abuts the Boundary Waters Canoe Area to the northwest. In combination, the two areas form a massive recreational area for backcountry campers or those who seek a more comfortable getaway at a cabin, lodge or resort.
