The state of Wisconsin has the smallest stretch of Superior’s shoreline and has a distinctly laid-back atmosphere. The rolling hills on the south shore are a stark contrast to the more rugged topography of the north shore and the water is noticeably warmer. Even during a cold summer, the waters along some of Wisconsin’s beaches are tepid (which is about the best swimmers can expect for Lake Superior!).

The Town of Bayfield is the gateway to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Bayfield itself has excellent “curb appeal” with its Victorian-style B&Bs and impressive perennial gardens in the summer. The Apostle Islands, a chain of 22 islands, are a paradise for kayakers and sailors in the summer and are equally stunning in the winter. Spectacular ice formations hang from the sandstone sea caves and create cathedral-like formations. The largest of the islands, Madeline Island, is accessible for most of the year by boat or ferry and by ice road in the winter. The Island is home to a small but eclectic town, LaPointe, and has campgrounds, hotels and rental homes.
